What is a credit union?
”Created for people, not profit.” This has been the philosophy of the credit union industry since its inception in 1909. A credit union is a non-profit, financial cooperative owned and operated by its members. The volunteer Board of Directors that oversees each credit union is elected by the membership. Credit unions have historically provided members with a safe place to save money, as well as a sensible place to borrow money at competitive interest rates through the "pooling" of members' funds. As a result of the quality of service and products credit union members are offered, credit unions are consistently rated as leaders in the financial industry when it comes to member satisfaction, according to the American Banker / Gallup consumer survey. History
East Texas Professional Credit Union (ETPCU) was originally organized in 1953 as Gregg County Teachers Credit Union, with education as its common bond. In 1960, we became the East Texas Teachers Credit Union to coincide with our expanded membership area. Then in 1986, our name was changed to East Texas Professional Credit Union to reflect an additional expansion in our field of membership. Today, our common bond has expanded to a community charter. Everyone who lives or works in the following counties is now eligible for Credit Union membership: Anderson, Angelina, Northern Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Upshur, Nacogdoches, Rusk and Smith.

What began as a $5 investment for 13 local individuals in 1953, has grown to a thriving establishment with assets of over $325 million and a membership base totaling more than 45,000 East Texans. Our growth has been consistent in the northeast Texas area for more than 55 years.

Today, ETPCU has office locations in Longview, Kilgore, Lufkin, Spring Hill, Marshall, Nacogdoches and Tyler. In the years since our establishment, the Credit Union's philosophy has never varied from the basic principle of people helping people. We are “Created for people, not profit.”

Each account is insured to at least $250,000 and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government.
