Understanding Your Account Balance for Overdrafts

East Texas Professional Credit Union offers an Overdraft Courtesy Program to its members. Under this Program, the Credit Union may pay overdrafts drawn on your account up to a maximum of $200.00. The Credit Union will charge the member the Overdraft fee, as disclosed on our Rate and Fee Schedule, in effect at the time of the overdraft. Participation in this Program is optional and is not required by the Credit Union. We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.

The primary benefit to our members is that the overdrawn transaction is paid rather than returned to the payee. This allows our members to avoid paying fees to merchants who charge a “returned item” fee. We use your available balance when determining whether a transaction will cause your account to overdraw and for charging overdraft fees.

The Overdraft Courtesy Program is only available with certain accounts and is limited to one per household. The Overdraft Courtesy Program does not cover ATM and everyday debit card transactions unless you have opted-in to coverage for those transactions. If you would like to discontinue enrollment in our Overdraft Courtesy Program (including, if applicable, opting-out of your consent to coverage of ATM and everyday debit card transactions), please call us at 903-323-0230, 800-256-5009, or visit any one of our branches. If you decline enrollment in the Overdraft Courtesy Program or opt-out of coverage of ATM and everyday debit card transactions, your transaction(s) may be declined or returned and you may be charged a returned item fee by both the Credit Union and the merchant.

In order to be eligible for this Program, the prospective member must not have a negative record with ChexSystems. For existing accounts, the account must be opened for 6 months or longer without an excessive number of insufficient funds fees, the average monthly balance for the account must have been greater than $200.00, and the member must be current on all debts owed to the Credit Union.  Additional eligibility rules apply to this Program.

Members are required to return their account to a positive balance within 30 days of being drawn into the negative. Failure to do so will result in revocation of membership in the Program. Other actions by a member may also result in revocation.

This brochure does not alter or amend the provisions pertaining to this Program that are contained in the Account Agreement and Disclosures. The Overdraft Courtesy Program may be discontinued at any time by the Credit Union.

We believe this Program will potentially benefit our members. However, it is intended as a “last resort” and we encourage our members to avoid writing overdrafts by monitoring their account activity through Internet Banking, Mobile Banking and careful review of the monthly statements that we issue.

Alternative Options
We also offer an Overdraft Protection Program that allows for the transfer of funds from a savings account, another account or a Line-of-Credit loan. Under the Overdraft Protection Program, the transfer fees charged to the member will usually be much less than the fees charged in the case of our Overdraft Courtesy Program.
